The tradition of a place is eternally linked to its gastronomic culture. Our goal is to promote a culinary culture by creating a bridge between yesterday and today with the most typical dishes of Messinia. Thus highlighting and honouring the great heritage of our ancestors.
The Mediterranean triad of wheat, olive oil and wine can be seen as the corner stone of our diet from ancient times. The Messinian landscape of olive groves, vineyards and orchards has helped to preserve traditional gastronomic customs and local folk memories. “Gourounopoula” , “Boukies” and “Petoules” are just a few of our dishes that have their roots in the past. The simple people of Messinia have preserved them over the years and these age old dishes continue to have a prominent place in our diet; both at our village festivals and the daily table of every Messinian home. The diet of the Messinians has always been, and continues to this day, dictated by our local seasonal produce; especially traditional dairy products and our unique extra virgin olive oil.
In autumn and winter, in years gone by, the diet included mainly meat which could be preserved due to low temperatures. In the spring, all families made pasta with milk from their goats that had given birth in the winter and had abundant milk production. In the summer they had plenty of tomatoes and vegetables. Their diet was based on what they cultivated themselves, each year seeds were kept for planting the following summer.
Nature took care of her gifts all year round, and the Messinians in turn treated them with respect and created the most delicious recipes. These very recipes enhanced with the advances of modern times and served in a historic setting, are the culinary experience that inspires us.
